The 22nd edition of the “Guide to the preparation, use and quality assurance of blood components” has been published online. The document released by the EDQM, European Directorate for the Quality of Medicines and Healthcare, in collaboration with a team of experts from all over Europe, is a compendium of widely used and accepted European standards that provide quality, safety and efficacy requirements for the preparation, use and control of blood components. The guide is aimed at all professionals who work with blood and blood components at every stage (donation, collection, analysis, processing, storage, distribution) and policy makers involved in updating regulatory frameworks in healthcare and, specifically, in the blood sector.

Among the new features of this edition, the EDQM reports an in-depth revision of the chapter dedicated to haemovigilance and the addition of two chapters on Blood components for topical use or injection and Blood supply contingency and emergency planning. There are also new features regarding donor selection, related to, among other things, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, malaria, plasmapheresis and blood pressure.
