The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has published updated technical guidelines for the screening of donors of substances of human origin (SoHO), including blood, haematopoietic stem cells, reproductive cells and tissues, for hepatitis B and hepatitis C viruses (HBV and HCV).

The guidelines introduce harmonised screening recommendations across Europe, supporting the early detection of hepatitis B and hepatitis C infections and helping to reduce the risk of transmission through substances of human origin (SoHO).

Developed in support of the new SoHO Regulation, which will apply from August 2027, the guidelines are based on the latest scientific evidence and support the harmonisation of quality and safety standards for substances of human origin (SoHO) used in medical care across Europe.
